La Galeria store Cusco is a new addition to the shopping scene in Cusco and has quickly become one of the leading contemporary design stores in town. The innovative idea for La Galeria was the brainchild of four contemporary designers with a view to showcase their modern designs as an alternative to the mainstream, traditional crafts and souvenirs on offer in Cusco.
The Isa Luna brand is inspired by Mexican culture and the traditional Cusco style of art. Her pieces blend the two traditions to create a unique take on traditional Peruvian symbols such as the Pucara bulls for good luck and abundance and the traditional altarpieces. She works with local Cusco artists that use the traditional techniques to transform these cultural icons into modern works of art. Check out her Frida Kahlo inspired marbled cups and altars for something different to remember your trip by! She also designs a colourful range of t-shirts that celebrate mexican culture with a modern twist.
Lorena Pestana is an architect by trade whose jewellery designs are inspired by nature and her Peruvian heritage. She brings a modern, elegance to her pieces without losing the deep connection with indigenous cultures and symbolism that influences her work. Her pieces are minimalist, simple, chic and hand-crafted in small batches. Her new collection inspired by the Chaquiras traditional weaving techniques in the Peruvian Amazon is one of our favourites. However, if you are looking for a reminder of your time in Peru, the ‘Mythologies’ collection has some stunning necklaces and earrings inspired by the Mochica culture including reptiles, birds and cacti.
For those of you who know us well, you will have heard us mention Cocoliso several times. This beautiful brand created by founder Elise has been one of our favourite stores in Cusco for a few years now. Her clothing brand has gone from strength to strength and she now offers a fabulous range of hand-knitted and hand-designed 100% alpaca sweaters, cardigans, blankets and hats and scarves. Her collection has grown to include a beautiful selection of alpaca knitwear for babies. Elise works with local women’s cooperatives who receive a fair trade wage to create the garments. She also has some of the most unique and modern alpaca knitwear designs on the market in Cusco.
Sake is a Peruvian brand founded by fashion designer Ana Tafur. Ana blends traditional Andean weavings with sustainable materials such as vegan leather from the shiringa tree and eco-paiche, a material that comes from the Amazonian paiche fish to create stunning, modern hand bags, totes and purses. Each product is made by local women for a fair trade wage in communities in the Peruvian Andes and Amazon, helping to preserve ancestral weaving techniques and turn them into contemporary works of art.
These four young women and their exciting brands are leading the charge in terms of contemporary design in Cusco. The level of care and love that goes into each of their products is inspiring. They all work with local craftspeople and communities to preserve ancestral techniques. As a result, they have created contemporary designs with a strong Peruvian heritage.
Plus, did we mention the modern, elegant design of the store is a pleasure to visit making La Galeria the perfect place to stop off and buy a souvenir of your trip to Peru?
