Attention all lovers of modern design, don’t miss a visit to the Macondo store in San Blas! This colourful Aladdin’s cave run by the charming Carlos is packed to the gills with fabulous art and clothing from contemporary Peruvian designers. Carlos’ vision is to support Peruvian artists and design so he seeks out up-and-coming mainly Cusco and Limeño artists and showcases their work in the store so they have a place to exhibit their art.
His refreshing vision where he only exhibits pieces he himself likes, makes for an eclectic, youthful selection of art. His playful, vivacious nature is also present in the design of the store which is full of colour and texture.
There’s a nice selection ranging from clothing, jewellery and accessories to illustrations, paintings and ceramic bulls and the charming Albito who manages the store is more than happy to bring you on a tour of contemporary Peruvian art as you browse.
Our favourite take-home pieces if you’re looking to add some contemporary Peruvian art to your collection, include the stunning and thoughtful illustrations by Lima artist Fito Espinoza, the personalized modern version of the famous ‘Pucara’ Bulls by Edwin Quispecuro decorated in gold leaf, silver and bronze and the resin statues by plastic arts maestro Marcelo Wong.
For Peruvian designed clothing, Macondo stocks the knitwear collection by Norma Peña created with alpaca and sheep wool that featured in the ‘Cusco Always in Fashion’ week in 2013 and the Anañau ballerina-style footwear range decorated with a modern take on the typical embroidery style from Arequipa.
The Macondo store Cusco is part of a ‘café-concept’ so you can also enjoy reasonably priced meals in the adjoining Macondo restaurant. Do stop by as you head up to San Blas as Macondo will take you on a whistle-stop journey of contemporary Peruvian art that you don’t see elsewhere in Cusco.
